Frequently asked questions

What is the whisper key for?

It stops low notes (below G♯3) from cracking up to the octave. Keep it pressed with the left thumb; the chart lists it as “Whisper key (left thumb)”.

What are flick keys?

Left-thumb keys touched for an instant at the start of A3, B♭3, B3 and C4 so the note speaks cleanly. Some players simply hold them down.

Is bassoon music in bass clef?

Mostly, with tenor clef for high passages. Note names in this chart follow bass-clef notation.

Which notes use the half-hole?

F♯3, G3 and G♯3 are played with the left index-finger hole half open. The chart marks these as “half-hole”.
