Frequently asked questions

What does “open” mean on the trumpet?

No valves pressed. The open harmonics are C4, G4, C5, E5, G5 and so on – the notes shown as “open” in the chart.

Do the cornet and flugelhorn use the same fingerings?

Yes. All B♭ brass use the same valve combinations; only the tone and shape differ.

What note is written C on the trumpet?

Concert B♭. The B♭ trumpet sounds a major second lower than written, so to match a piano you play a part written one whole step higher.

Are 1·3 and 3 alone the same note?

Nearly. 1·3 tends to be slightly flat and 3 alone slightly sharp. For E♭4, A4 and similar notes, choose according to how your third-valve slide is set.
