The fourth valve replaces 1·3 with better intonation and is required for notes below low E♭ (E♭2). On a three-valve tuba, read fourth-valve fingerings as 1·3.

Frequently asked questions

Is tuba music written at concert pitch?

Yes. Orchestral and wind-band tuba parts are in bass clef at concert pitch. The part is the same for a BB♭ or E♭ tuba – the fingerings change with the instrument.

Can I use this chart on an E♭ tuba?

No. On an E♭ tuba the same written notes need different valve combinations (shifted by a perfect fourth). This chart is for BB♭ tuba only.

What is the fourth valve for?

It replaces the 1·3 combination with better intonation and extends the low register. Notes below low E♭ need it.

Are the fingerings the same as the euphonium?

For bass-clef parts, the valve patterns are the same as the euphonium one octave lower.
